How We Fund

Everything You Ever Need to Know: Youth Learn to Earn at the Farm

Thank you for supporting the next generation to feed us! A letter from our Founder + Executive Director, Tessa Edick

As a nation divided we find unity in eating - and the farm that provides for it. At the table there is no black white rich or poor. There is hunger. We all share the need to eat.

This year it seemed more important than ever to bring youth closer to agriculture and know where your food comes from, with transparency and value. Everything you ever needed to know you learn at the farm – communication, cooking, accounting, conflict resolution, patience, hard work, empowerment, nature, taste and how to self-sustain.

The future of food is in the hands of the next generation to feed us. Who will replace the 59-year-old family farmers retiring in the next decade? By teaching youth on a working farm, they learn to earn custom growing for NYC celebrated chefs: Jean-Georges Vongerichten, ABC Kitchen, Gotham Bar and Grill, April Bloomfield, Fish & Game, Terrance Brennan and others, who commit seed money to our youth education program and buy produce from the farm featured on their menus. Our Ag-Academy has formally partnered with SUNY/ Cornell CALS curriculum that teaches students the business of food at Empire Farm in a replicable model NYS is eager to support and expand.

Our in-residence three-month curriculum allows students to “manage” a client with 10-acre field as classroom and distribute the high quality specialty organic vegetables to restaurants on time, to spec, complete with pricing, invoice, payment and Profit/Loss QuickBooks management. It's life changing. It is effective. It is meaningful. And it provides our non-profit organization with an income that keeps our foundation sustainable and funded. But we need your support to continue...

The future of food in America is broken unless we FarmOn! A return to our agrarian roots is vital for rural communities and a stronger America. By supporting local agriculture you not only optimize health - you build local economies with commerce that creates an economic engine and sustainable food system that also respects farming as a noble profession, and inspires youth into viable livelihoods that are rewarding as we opt out of processed food and opt in to health and wellness.
